Viggo Mortensen stars in this astonishingly beautiful Western set in 1880s Patagonia. Discussion with director Lisandro Alonso follows.
Discussion follows with director Lisandro Alonso
The films of Argentinian “slow cinema” auteur Lisandro Alonso deliver a singular intensity in this quick-cut age. Long takes, abundant silence and sparse dialogue accompany characters across hostile terrain. In Jauja (the name suggests a fabled city like El Dorado), Viggo Mortensen is a Danish engineer on a desperate search for his teenage daughter in 1880s remote Patagonia. With echoes of John Ford, 2001 and Lewis Carroll, Jauja is an astonishingly beautiful and gripping tale. D: Lisandro Alonso, Argentina, subtitled, 2014, 109m
