Gabrielle Cabrera

Predoctoral Chavez Fellow

Gabrielle Cabrera is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Anthropology at Rutgers University. Her dissertation fieldwork is set in California's San Joaquin Valley and focuses on the experiences of undocumented migrants. Her dissertation explores three primary groups: 1) fully undocumented youth without DACA attending the local university and their assessment of their future endeavors compared to the post-DACA generation; 2) undocumented young adults with DACA working in the local community; and 3) older undocumented women, mothers and grandmothers who are community organizers for immigrants' rights and housing access. Her work highlights the importance of care, community, and reciprocity through the joys, triumphs, and pains of undocumented life. She is a contributing author to We Are Not Dreamers: Undocumented Scholars Theorize Undocumented Life in the United States. Her research has been supported by the Wenner-Gren Foundation, National Science Foundation, and Ruth Landes Memorial Research Fund.
