Jorge Cuéllar delivered the keynote address at SALALM

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Assistant Professor of LALACS Jorge Cuéllar delivered the keynote address at the 70th annual meeting of the Seminar for the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM) at New York University, hosted by New York University's Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), in partnership with Columbia University Libraries, the City University of New York, and the New York Public Library. Cuéllar's talk, "Archives Under Siege: Views from Central America," explored the disastrous impacts of authoritarian governments on the preservation and dissemination of independent voices in the region. Speaking directly to the concerns of attendees, Cuéllar's address set the tone for an impactful conference in which attendees shared strategies for supporting academic research and creative work and preserving cultural memory in and across the Americas. SALALM is a professional membership association for librarians, archivists, book dealers, content providers, scholars, and students interested in collecting, preserving, and providing access to Latin American, Iberian, Caribbean, and U.S. Latine studies information resources in all formats.
